Gardener Position Available

We are excited to announce that we are looking for a gardener to join our team in The Walled Garden

Job Title: Gardener

Contract: Permanent

Hours: Full Time/Part Time

Salary: £22,000 pro rata

About Us

The walled gardens form part of an 18th and 19th century designed landscape and are of outstanding architectural interest. Currently, the gardens consist of extensive herbaceous borders, mature trees and shrubs, and a glasshouse containing grapevines, figs, and stone fruits. At present we are open for events such as weddings, by appointment for tours, and on designated open days throughout the year. Over the coming years we hope to develop an exciting programme of events, all with the garden as a backdrop.

About You

This is an opportunity to join the estate at an exciting time as we look to develop and improve the existing gardens. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic gardener with a recognised formal horticultural qualification, and experience in a similar setting. This role will include a range of horticultural tasks such as:

·         propagation

·         planting

·         pruning

·         mulching

·         weeding

·         leaf clearing

·         hedge cutting

Experience using garden machinery such as hedge cutters, strimmers, blowers, and mowers is essential, and ideally you will have PA1 and PA6 certificates. As we aim to develop and enhance the garden, we would like to find a creative person with an eye for design, great plant knowledge, and a desire to keep learning. We would also like to develop various revenue streams for the garden so would be keen to meet anybody who has experience of cut flower production. Working alongside a Head Gardener and an Estate Groundsman, you’ll be part of a team in the garden and the successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work with volunteers, students, and trainees as well as under their own direction. You will be required to drive various estate vehicles so a full clean driving license is essential. Due to the location of the garden, it will be necessary for you to have your own vehicle to travel to and from work.

If you feel like you would be a good fit for the role, please send a CV and covering letter outlining your suitability to Kate (kate@prestonhall.co.uk) by Wednesday 22nd March 2023.
